Turning a Parade Inside Out


The Governor's Institiute on the Arts of Vermont does a big Fourth of July Parade every year

The set-up:

The Overture:


The spectrum flags gather in the center of town to sing "Freedom is Coming" directed by Ron Kelly.

The Running Rainbow: They start off by color to make a street-sized rainbow.

They drop the flags and pick up the parade proper, and start back.

The Parade:

Horses (Red) of the Dawn............Suns (Orange) Rising

Big (Yellow) Cats of Noon

And the Band and Samba Dancers

(Green) Thoughts in a (Green) Afternoon Shade

The (Blue) Birds of Fleeting Light

And Last, the (Purple) Dragons of the Night

"The Zipper"

The Color Marshall meets them in the center of town

She spreads her fan, splits the parade, and walks down it to the end. zipper

She calls out the dragons, who follow her down the set...and on out.

Followed by the Birds, followed by the Humans.....

The Band, the Cats, the Suns, and finally the Horses,
And the parade continues on its way, going the same direction, but with its order reversed.
